Before television and the rest of the world rendered imaginary journeys obsolete, we were free to conjure the marvels brought by the fair, the carousel, and the circus, where cowboys and odalisques existed in flesh and blood. Then came magic, the most potent of all — cinema’s grand screen. Yet, for much of the last century, the circus retained an edge over cinema — its vivid, unparalleled color. The only means of rivaling the circus’s chromatic brilliance were the posters adorning the walls.
